Square edge ceiling tiles are designed to sit on your ceiling grid which is referred to as lay in, whereas tegular edge tiles are made to sit slightly through the grid. Tegular edge tiles reduce the visibility of the ceiling grid and are mostly used as a design feature. These are also known as rebated or beveled edge tiles.

Square edge ceiling tiles are the cheaper alternative than the likes of tegular edge tiles and microlook edge tiles. They reason for this is because they are a less complex design, and are made in larger volume, making them a more cost-effective option.
